The first beatitude, \u201cBlessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven,\u201d is not exactly the kind of statement one hears on today\u2019s media. To express one\u2019s need, to acknowledge one\u2019s lack\u2014that does not seem the way to inherit anything, let alone a kingdom. Yet these words are Jesus\u2019 words, our Lord and Master, God incarnate, Wisdom Incarnate, and they echo through the ages and knock at the doors of our hearts.


\nThe book, Royal Purposes, compiled by Edwin and Lillian Harvey, is small\u2014sixty-four pages in all, yet it has proved a blessing to many. It encourages all readers to take heart when suffering of any kind knocks at their door, for God has a purpose in suffering which, after all, enables us to more easily become \u201cpoor in spirit\u201d and thus inherit the kingdom of heaven. On page thirty-three, in the reading entitled \u201cThrough the Door of Destitution,\u201d the authors have included a poem by E. C. Priestley which encourages us all to enter through this \u201cdoor.\u201d
\nOnly the beggared ask,
\nOnly the weakened cling,
\nOnly the joyless crave
\nJoy from the living spring.<\/p>\n

Only the conquered yield,
\nOnly the humbled pray,
\nOnly the helpless trust
\nJesus, the soul\u2019s strong Stay.<\/p>\n

Only the weary rest,
\nOnly the seekers find,
\nOnly the souls are blest
\nWho in the Savior hide.<\/p>\n
